“Facial recognition” refers to technology capable of identifying a person from an image.

It is typically used to control access in the same way as other biometrics such as fingerprint or eye iris recognition systems.

Many social media platforms, most notably Facebook, use facial recognition technology.

Security services and police in many countries also use it, while some smartphones only unlock once it recognises its owner's face.

A significant benefit of a facial recognition system is that it does not require the cooperation of a subject to work.

However, facial recognition is less accurate than other biometric systems.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Marius Coetzee, CEO Ideco, about the science of facial recognition.

Ideco sells biometric products and services.

You can take a photo of a person… and do a Google search… you’ll be surprised how accurate the facial recognition can be!

The facial recognition technology used in an iPhone creates 30 000 tiny dots on a face… so it depends on how identical the twins are… to use that technology in a criminal case… won’t be sufficient…
