Cele denies lack of cops at Global Citizen Festival

Police Minister Bheki Cele has denied allegations that there weren't enough boots on the ground at the Global Citizen Festival.

Cele says there were over 200 police officers deployed to the stadium precinct and eight private security companies who provided around 2000 security personnel, reports EWN's Lindsay Dentlinger.

The minister now says 50 cases have been reported to police, up from the initial tally of one that Saps recorded on Monday.

Scores of concertgoers were mugged and harassed by thugs following Sunday’s event, mostly near the Sasol garage.

Celea told a press briefing that at least five cases have already come before the court and six suspects are being held in custody in connection to the robberies and assaults.

50 cases were reported.
