The ANC has ordered both Qedani Mahlangu and Brian Hlongwa to step down from their roles in the Provincial Executive Committee.

The Gauteng ANC's Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) on Monday ordered former Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu and former provincial executive chief whip Brian Hlongwa to resign from their roles in the ANC Gauteng power structure.

EWN reporter Clement Manyathela says, according to a letter sent by ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte on November 20, the two were asked to step down but were told that their membership would not be revoked.

A second letter sent on 10 December to both Mahlangu and Hlongwa stipulated that the ANC's National Working Committee had taken a decision that the two should step down from the PEC with immediate effect.

Both were implicated in the Life Esidimeni tragedy, which resulted in the death of about 144 psychiatric patients.

The PEC in Gauteng will be sitting today and I think it will be interesting to see how they react to this.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

According to Manyathela, the second letter sent by the NWC says that although the two have been ordered to resign, this will not affect their party membership.
