Disability activist Eddie Ndopu plans to be the first physically disabled person to travel into space.

Disability activist Eddie Ndopu says the face of leadership needs to change and that while people that have come before him have paved the way for civil rights in the context of disability, more can be done.

Ndopu recently travelled to New York to the UN General Assembly as part of a cohort of young leaders to deliver a powerful message on behalf of marginalized youth.

His latest endeavour will see him join forces with MTV as he aims to become the first physically disabled person to travel to space.

The 28-year-old, who lives with spinal muscular atrophy, joined Azania Mosaka in studio to share more on his journey and what he hopes to achieve.

As a young, black, queer, disabled person, I need to dream bigger than my circumstances and I often say to people when I give my motivational talks that you are bigger and more expansive than the space you currently occupy and that is what my entire advocacy is about.

Eddie Ndopu, disability activist

There is another dimension about joy, about intimacy, about aspiration and hopes. Part of my work is about how do we humanize the statistic because behind these statistics that we quote, there are real human beings and there is lost potential there. I really want to bring that to the fore.

Eddie Ndopu, disability activist

We need to see the face of leadership change and that is what I am deeply invested in.
