'Cyril is the most popular president since Nelson Mandela'

Author Max de Preez weighs in on where SA would be if Jacob Zuma was still president and the impact of Ramaphosa now.

Where would South Africa be if former President Jacob Zuma was still president? Columnist and journalist Max de Preez says it's important to look at what could have been if Zuma was still the president of the country.

There was a lot of Ramaphoria at the beginning of the year and that is all gone and it makes no sense as we rejoiced when Zuma left. We didn't know what Cyril was going to do. And then he started doing more or less the right things and yet we grow more pessimistic.

Max de Preez, Columnist and Journalist

If Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma became president of the African National Congress (ANC), Jacob Zuma would still be president of the country.

READ: 'Journalists need to be extra vigilant, not just blindly report on everything'

We would've been downgraded to junk status by all the agencies which billions would leave the country. It would have meant that we would pay R30 to the dollar and the Gupta's wouldn't have left.

Max de Preez, Author and Columnist

Du Preez believes that if Zuma was still president, the Gupta's would have captured Treasury and state capture would have continued. South Africa would have been far more divided and poorer had Zuma remained president. The author adds that Cyril Ramaphosa strategy to keep the ANC together has worked.

He has won over Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and is probably going to make her his deputy in May. She cleaned out North West Province for him. His main problem is his secretary general of the party, Ace Magashula. Cyril is the most popular president since Nelson Mandela
