The team of pupils from the German School in Cape Town were crowned the 2018 National FLL champions this month.

A group of bright Cape Town schoolchildren will jet off to Detroit in the United States in April next year to compete in the First Lego League (FLL) World Championships.

The team of pupils from the German School in Cape Town were crowned the 2018 National FLL champions this month.

A total of 135 provincial teams entered this year and 31 of them qualified for the National Championships.

The FLL is a worldwide themed program that helps learners develop practical Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (“STEM”) skills through a hands-on competition.

The German School's team coach, Ross Needham, explains that the theme of this season's competition was "Into Orbit" - tackling the challenges of space travel.

His charges conducted an experiment looking at extracting methane from the Martian atmosphere to be used as rocket fuel.

They came up with an experiment to prove that you could use the materials on Mars to create methane-based fuel to send rockets back to earth or further out into space.

They also had to complete a research project based on the theme.

The kids have to design and build a robot to tackle a number of problems.

They have to optimise their programming to get the maximum number of points within a very small time limit.
