When philanthropist Ian MacDonald died in a car crash, his friends started a campaign to continue his work at a local school.

A group of Cape Town friends have created a scholarship programme in honour of a loved one who passed away.

When philanthropist Ian MacDonald died in car accident in February, his friends started a fundraising campaign to continue his work at a local school.

The group, dubbed 'Fella's Army', set up a crowdfunding campaign to refurbish the classrooms of Hillwood Primary to keep their friend's legacy alive.

Fella's Army Outreach raised R200 000 using crowd-sourcing platform Back-a-Buddy and donations from other private funders.

The group refurbished the grade R, grade 1 and grade 2 classrooms at the school, explains coordinator and friend Rob Broster.

They also established the Ian MacDonald scholarship, which will be awarded to a promising Grade 7 pupil.

The scholarship is for a school that is in a much better academic place than many of the schools in Lavender Hill.

The scholarship will provide school fees, uniforms, transport as well as stationery and will cover grade 8 through to grade 12.

We've committed to one kid per year, for the next five years, at least.

Rob Broster, coordinator of Fella's Army Outreach

Broster says MacDonald had devoted himself to the Lavender Hill school, working through a programme called Partners for Possibility, which matches business leaders with school principals from under-resourced communities.

He says his friend didn't believe in talking about making South Africa a better place, but in doing the work to make it happen.
