Sanef wants the court to stop the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) from intimidating or threatening reporters.

The South African National Editors' Forum (Sanef) has approached the Equality Court over the intimidation of five South African journalists by members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

Sanef is seeking to stop the party from intimidating or threatening journalists.

At a protest outside the Zondo Commission last month, Julius Malema called on his supporters to deal decisively with certain journalists who supposedly defend white monopoly capital.

Last week, journalists Karima Brown and Adriaan Basson opened criminal charges against EFF supporters.

Sanef Spokesperson Sam Mkokeli says they have tried to engage the EFF over some of its public statements.

We tried to have conversations with the economic freedom fighters about statements made by Julius Malema and other people in the party in public and on social media. They flatly refused to meet us. We consulted with lawyers and they suggested we take the route that has been announced today.

Sam Mkokeli, Sanef spokesperson

The nature of the allegations, these are the issues that the Equality Court is best placed to handle.

Sam Mkokeli, Sanef spokesperson

Sam Mkokeli, Sanef spokesperson

The EFF has released a statement. It says it will oppose Sanef's attempts.

The party says the application is based on a "self-preoccupied attempt to suppress criticism of journalism and the media."
