Pork producers lost about R550 million due to listeriosis outbreak

SA Pork Producers' Organisation Johann Kotze makes an assessment of the impact on SA markets caused by the listeriosis outbreak.

In September, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi announced that the listeria outbreak, which claimed more than 180 lives, was over.

As consumers are gearing for festive season shopping, we take a look at the impact of listeriosis on the South African meat-processing plants and whether the situation has normalised.

CEO of the SA Pork Producers' Organisation Johann Kotze says the announcement of the listeria outbreak dropped the prices of pork lower than prices in 2013 but prices have since righted again.

As primary producers, we lost about R550 million from the time the minister announced the outbreak up until he said the outbreak is over.

Johann Kotze, CEO of the SA Pork Producers' Organisation

It was a great impact on primary producers and I think the small-scale farmers lost the most.

Johann Kotze, CEO of the SA Pork Producers' Organisation

Kotze says the listeriosis scare and subsequent price drop in pork actually worked in favour of the fresh pork sector as many people "re-discovered" fresh pork.

He says bacon sales remained the same as people could still cook it at home, but polony and other processed meat sales remain down.

To hear the rest of the conversation with Johann Kotze, listen below:
