Last year, CapeTalk followed the journey of 80-year-old Julia Albu who was on a quest to travel to England in her 20-plus-year old Toyota Tazz "Tracy".
Julia's trip was a success as she arrived safely in the UK. But she took ill ahead of her drive back home and was hospitalised. She did not know how to bring her beloved car back home.
A Scotsman she met some time back in Ethiopia came back into her life and offered to help.
Ged Meechan picked up Julia's car in Egypt at customs and drove it to Cape Town.
He speaks to CapeTalk's John Maytham about his journey from Egypt to Cape Town.
After meeting Julia, I followed her story on Facebook and saw that she arrived in London and was incredibly impressed.— Ged Meechan
I followed her adventure and I gathered that something must have happened because on her back home in Italy her blog stopped.— Ged Meechan
I also decided to travel to Cape Town in my old car and left England on 26th of September by the time I got to Greece I was in communication with Julia's family that I would pick the car up from wherever it was and drive it to Cape Town.— Ged Meechan
I drove my car to as far as Thessalonica and the plan was to drive it to Athens and ship it from there.— Ged Meechan
I was fairly comfortable that if something bad happened someone will come along, although it might take weeks.— Ged Meechan
Tracey is an incredible car. There were absolutely no issues whatsoever, no punctures— Ged Meechan
