NSFAS cuts off SMS communication due to phishing scam targeting students

NSFAS SMS cut off
NSFAS says the only genuine messages students will receive, will be to direct them to its portal to check their application status.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) says it will no longer be communicating directly with students via SMS because of concerns about a phishing scam that aims to compromise students' personal data.

Administrator Dr Randall Carolissen says they picked up on fraudulent messages going out to applicants during the festive season designed to look like messages from the NSFAS contact centre.

He says an investigation showed the messages did not originate from NSFAS systems.

We have taken the prudent step of directing students to the NSFAS portal where they log on with a personal pin number to get their application status.

Unfortunately, we had to cut off our SMS communication. As from yesterday (Thursday), no SMS will be coming from NSFAS.

Dr Carolissen also clarified that although applications for funding closed on 30 November 2018, exceptions could be made for applications for TVET colleges because there are still places available.

He says the Scheme received more than 400 000 new applications and has already approved over 240 000.

It is currently reviewing about 100 000 students who were previously rejected.

There are indications that quite a number of them will qualify.
