CT City says fired MyCiTi drivers protests an attempt to destablilise province

The City of Cape Town responded to commuter concerns that the MyCiTi bus service is not running optimally, complaining that buses are often behind schedule.

Mayoral Committee member for Transport at City of Cape Town, Felicity Purchase says the bus service is operating at 90% capacity and more drivers will be recruited to replace those that were dismissed.

Meanwhile, the former MyCiti drivers are geared to start protesting demanding the City of Cape Town insource their services.

This will not be a strike but a protest because the drivers have been dismissed.

Felicity Purchase, Mayco Member for Transport

According to Purchase the model used by MyCiTi was decided nationally in terms of the rapid bus system and the unions were party to it.

This is a movement to destabilise the Western Cape and we need to see it for what it is.

Felicity Purchase, Mayco Member for Transport

These are drivers who have been dismissed and have been to see us with political parties involved.

She adds unions were part of the agreement reached and to then go against the agreement is problematic.

You have to take responsibility for it because the City cannot micro-manage every contract.
