As the institutions of higher learning reopen for the 2019 year, the many newly matriculated students are looking for opportunities to study.
South African Union of Students spokesperson, Thabo Shingange says it has been monitoring institutions across the country to ensure students receive assistance.
Some universities have made it clear they will not offer walk-in applications. He says this follows the stampede witnessed at the University of Johannesburg a few years ago. All applications must be done online.
Shingange says there are a few universities who are already experiencing queues.

Shingange says conversations need to be had in terms of broadening the post-schooling sector to avoid congestions at universities.
We need to look at other viable options and alternatives. Once we have this conversation going we won't be experiencing these queues.

Another thing is if you apply on time, then you won't be having this particular predicament.

He says another contributing factor to the congestion at universities is that the government has failed to improve the quality of education at TVET colleges.
