Planning to lose weight? Here's why eating a salad might not be such a good idea

If losing weight tops the list of your New Year's resolutions you might want to take note of this conversation.

A survey by Business Insider found that some salads that are thought of as healthy actually had twice as many kilojoules as a McDonald's Big Mac burger.

The online publication looked at the nutritional content of supposedly diet-friendly meals from Kauai, Mugg & Bean, Spur, Nu, Nando’s and Steers and found that many punched way above the kilojoule count of McDonald's burger.

Journalist at Business Insider Jay Caboz says most people find it daunting to count calories and kilojoules that they just go with the general perceptions that salads are a healthier choice.

The problem is that a lot of menus in stores don't show you the kilojoule count so it becomes a bit difficult unless you are willing to go onto the internet and find the information.

The shocking factor came when we discover that a Cobb salad coming in as twice the kilojoule as McDonald's burger.

The challenge is that this information is not in front of us and on the menu.
