'Woolies has no leg to stand on for copying unique feature from my baby carrier'

Businesswoman Shannon McLaughlin says Woolworths needs to explain why it apparently plagiarised her baby carrier design.

McLaughlin, the founder of the Ubuntu Baby Carrier, has accused the retail giant of stealing her original concept.

She says the pattern on the Woolworths version of the carrier is identical to her Ubuntu Baby Carrier, down to the stitching and buckles.

According to McLaughlin, the waistband on her baby carrier is a unique feature which as not been duplicated on any other baby carrier product up until now.

The waistband is exactly the same. That's the feature that we worked on ourselves that can't be compared to any baby carrier in the world.

Woolworths have absolutely no leg to stand on when it comes to our waistband.

While the woman is not planning to take legal action at this stage, she says she wants to hold the retailer publicly accountable.

I'm not taking them to court right now, I'm taking them to South Africa to show the nation what Woolworths thinks is okay to do to entrepreneurs on an ongoing basis.

McLaughlin says she's approached Woolworths and plans to meet with representatives on Wednesday afternoon.

Woolworths was invited to respond, but the retailers said it would first investigate before making any official comment.
