[LISTEN] 'I can tell you that football in Egypt is a religion' #AFCON2019

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Tuesday that Egypt will be hosting the African Cup of Nations (Afcon).

South Africa and Egypt submitted bids after Cameroon were removed as hosts due to infrastructure readiness and safety concerns.

Content producer at News24, Duncan Alfreds visited Egypt and he speaks to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies about Egypt's readiness to host Afcon.

I was just in Egypt and I can tell that after being on the roads in Cairo I believe that South African taxi drivers are fantastically obedient on the road.

Duncan Alfreds, Content Producer at News24

Unfortunately, I didn't go to football stadiums but I can tell you that football there is a religion.

Duncan Alfreds, Content Producer at News24

The work day would stop if there is something about football on TV.

Duncan Alfreds, Content Producer at News24

When people asked me where I was from I didn't even say South Africa, I just said Bafana-Bafana and they knew instantly.

Alfreds also touched on the security elements in Egypt.

You can't miss the fact that Egypt is a security state. You drive a kilometre or two and there is a police checkpoint.

Duncan Alfreds, Content Producer at News24

But there is always an opportunity to pay a bribe if you have violated the law in any way or fashion. There were a number of locals who told me don't worry about the security you just pay a bribe.
