Sunday Times responds to top cop Vearey's allegations of smear campaign

Sunday Times bureau chief Dave Chambers responds to General Jeremy Vearey's claims that one of its journalists was part of the smear.

He says he is unhappy that CapeTalk host Kieno Kammies provided a platform for Vearey without challenging him on his claims.

In the airtime you afforded him, he dragged our name through the mud and several others as well. And you didn't stop him once to challenge him and ask him to produce some evidence for the allegations he was making.

Kieno Kammies responded that Vearey was making claims of a smear campaign and CapeTalk hoped to hear the Sunday Times version of events.

It would be easier to do so if we knew what Vearey's side of the story was.

Dave Chambers, Sunday Times bureau chief

Chambers says the Cape Times contacted him on Wednesday enclosing a complaint to the press ombudsman by Vearey and colleague Colonel Charl Kinnear against Sunday Times reporter Aron Hymon.

He says the complaint accused Hymon of serious ethical breaches and of entrapment.

I did tell Aron to phone Vearey...on Tuesday to request a copy of the affidavit which Kinnear submitted at Mfuleni Police Station on Sunday.

Dave Chambers, Sunday Times bureau chief

Chambers says Vearey told the press ombudsman that the phone call never occurred and accused Hyman of being dishonest.

He adds that Times Live on Thursday carried an article which includes a copy of the telephone recording in which he requested the affidavit. Vearey then withdrew his complaint, says Chambers.

Chambers says he will not go on air alongside Vearey to discuss the issue further.

There is something going on here that I don't understand...and I do not want to be part of fuelling this strange situation by going on air with Jeremy Vearey.
