285 political parties have registered for 2019 elections - IEC

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Thursday held a press briefing to discuss its readiness for the upcoming elections which are expected to be held in May this year.

EWN reporter Thando Kubheka who was at the briefing says the IEC claims it is ready for the elections.

Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo says that their first major task was to update the voters' roll to ensure that it contains addresses of all voices and saying that they are pleased to announce that there has been significant progress.

About 21,5 million people are on that voters' roll with complete addresses. The IEC has also partnered with Statistic South Africa in order to reference those details during the elections. There are about 285 political parties have registered to participate in the elections.
