Fatal Overberg blaze contained but firefighters remain on watch

Overberg fire chief Reinhard Geldenhuys says the deadly fires in the Overstrand area have all been contained.

Although there are currently no active fire lines, Geldenhuys says firefighters will remain on standby for at least 48 hours to monitor any changes in wind or rain.

We are happy to report that we have got a 100% containment, but we're not breaking out the champagne yet.

Now it's about mopping up, keeping watch and guarding. Air support remains on standby.

Geldenhuys commended all the crews involved in the relief efforts over the past week and a half.

More than 5 000 hectares of vegetation have been destroyed by the fires linked to a flare shot on New Year's Eve in the Overstrand area.

The fire claimed the life of a 59-year-old woman in Pringle Bay and at least two other people were injured.

A 34-year-old man suspected of firing the flare was arrested and remains in police custody.
