How will expropriation without compensation affect urban housing?

Land expropriation without compensation in South Africa has become a topic we cannot avoid. Months back, the ANC and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) joined forces and called for the expropriation of land without compensation. The motion called into question the constitutional settlement and provoked both triumphal delight and defensive anxiety as South Africans revert to polarised positions on land and property.

Now what does this mean when you want to invest in property in the urban area?

One of the factors you have to take into account is the market value of the property, how the property was historically obtained. The government will not go on a rampage to take everyone's property. Its inconceivable for the government to take people's private property or any land that is actually profitable or useful to a social need in South Africa.

Lwazi Mtshigo - Research and Advocacy officer at Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI)

Speaking to Africa Melane on the Weekend Breakfast Show, Matshigo said, the expropriation debate in South Africa exists within the broader land reform programme which the government has embarked on since democracy.
