ANC might have to use Jacob Zuma to balance public expectations - analyst

Political analyst Prof Somadoda Fikeni provides analysis of the ANC election manifesto that was delivered over the weekend at Moses Mabhida stadium in KwaZulu-Natal.

Fikeni says the bulk of the manifesto spoke to the current economic issues in the country as well as picked up on DA's focus on the issue of foreign nationals and the need for the Reserve Bank to be flexible.

He says the issue of foreign nationals was presented in a more pragmatic manner rather than the way Johannesburg mayor, Herman Mashaba's has approached the issue in the past.

The issue of 'the ANC has made mistakes, please accept us we will make amends' was quite an interesting one because at times political parties gloss over even the most catastrophic moments in their track records and simply present themselves as new.

Former president Jacob Zuma arrived to loud cheers at the launch.

There are reports that President Cyril Ramaphosa is planning to involve Zuma in an elder council or deploy him on diplomatic missions.

A divided party will have divided views on the same individual, but what they are agreeing on, is that ANC has to balance public expectations but also internal unity.

You may have some consensus that he could be used effectively in areas where he is the strongest like KZN but you won't find him campaigning in areas like the Western Cape.
