The Two Oceans Aquarium has trained teachers at the three “Marine Sciences Node Schools” to teach the subject themselves.

Marine sciences will be launched as a new pilot subject at three Western Cape schools this year.

The Two Oceans Aquarium initiative will offer the new subject to Grade 10 learners at the Gansbaai Academy, Simon's Town High and South Peninsula High schools.

At least 15 to 20 pupils ate each of the schools have opted to take the subject so far, says the aquarium's Russell Stevens.

We are still opening the subject for students.. we are hoping to boost the numbers to 40 students at each of the schools.

Russell Stevens, Head of Education at the Two Oceans Aquarium

Marine sciences will be taken as an eighth elective class by learners in this pilot phase, in addition to their seven National Senior Certificate (NSC) subjects.

The Two Oceans Aquarium has trained teachers at the three “Marine Sciences Node Schools” to teach the subject themselves.

We will be guiding the teachers via skype regular meetings. They are an enthusiastic group of teachers.

Russell Stevens, Head of Education at the Two Oceans Aquarium

These learners will be the pilot group and successful candidates will be awarded a Two Oceans Aquarium Grade 12 Marine Sciences Certificate when matriculating.

This pilot will guide teachers to introduce this subject as an official matric subject in the future.

We will roll this out at schools that we are able to support. A new subject like this should not be introduced without ongoing support.

Russell Stevens, Head of Education at the Two Oceans Aquarium
