'Not what we're looking for' - the struggle of being young, gifted & disabled
Former business owner Makgosi Letimile says her job-seeking journey has been a traumatic experience because bigots cannot see past her disability.
Letimile wrote an opinion piece on The Daily Maverick, describing the exhausting obstacles she faces while looking for work.
Letimile is a former coffee shop owner with a diploma in office administration.
She became wheelchair-bound in 2016 after she was diagnosed with TB meningitis.
Since then, she's been on dozens of promising interviews but says it's been an uphill battle of rejection because of bigotry towards her physical disability.
I figure that if I wasn't qualified, then they wouldn't call me for an interview.Makgosi Letimile
Immediately when I come through to the interview, you can see it on people's faces.Makgosi Letimile
In almost every interview that I've been to, I've never seen a person with a visible disability.Makgosi Letimile
