'What we might see in these elections are voters returning to the ANC' says Dr Collette Schulz - Herzenberg.

Despite African National Congress' performance over the past decade and other flaws they might have, they still have people's loyalty. The state capture inquiry and other commissions are in a way proving what South African citizens have been suspecting that there has been an improper conduct and blatant corruption in certain public sectors.

The corruption cases and other improper conducts that the ANC leaders have been involved in have had a major impact on the party. Looking at 2016, the party did very badly as a result they lost few metros to the opposition party.

Will the ANC do badly or will it do well in the upcoming general elections?

There are a couple of issues which will help us understand why the ANC is doing quite well despite the bad performance and allegations of corruptions over the past few years. The focus needs to swing away from the ANC, we then need to look at how the DA and the EFF are doing. The DA at the moment is struggling to portray a coherent policy message. The most important factor for the ANC is president Ramaphosa. He is a very liked and trusted leader and he sits as a non partisan figure that people can trust.

Speaking to Africa on the Weekend Breakfast, Dr Collette said, what we might see in these elections are voters returning to the ANC, not because they give a stamp of approval to the ANC performance of the past decade, but because they want to give president Ramaphosa a chance.
