Mokgoro Commission: Former KZN Hawks boss Johan Booysen details his Saps career

EWN reporter Barry Bateman who is following the inquiry, says Booysen has gone into tremendous detail about his almost 40 years in the police force during his testimony.

He (Booysen) testified about how he started as a junior policeman working his way up to crime intelligence and then working his way up to being a unit commander. And ultimately becoming the head of the Hawks in KwaZulu Natal.

He adds that Booysen has always claimed that he was brought before a disciplinary hearing because of all the politically sensitive cases that he was involved in.

He went into detail about the KZN businessman Tosh Mpende who has former business links to former president Jacob Zuma's son Edward. He says this is a case that dated back to 2010, where there was about R50 million corruption related to accommodation for the Saps.

Barry Bateman, Reporter - EWN

Booysen testifies that there was collusion with 'an insider' in the Saps's procurement division and says he was pressurised to drop certain cases.

It got to a point where the police officer inside the Saps handed R1.4 million to Booysen inside a car during a sting operation where those involved were arrested.

Barry Bateman, Reporter - EWN

Booysen testifies that not long after those arrests, there was an expose about the Cato Mano death squad and internal and criminal prosecutions were brought against him.

Bateman says that Booysen also testified that he successfully challenged those charges at the Durban High Court.
