[LISTEN] Tshwane mayoral candidate Stevens Mokgalapa in conversation with Karima

The Democratic Alliance announced on Sunday that Stevens Mokgalapa will be its mayoral candidate following the resignation of Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga.

Mokgalapa is currently the DA's shadow minister of International Relations and Cooperation.

He took spoke to Karima Brown on the experience he will be bringing to the position.

I am under no illusion on the task awaiting me. I joined the Democratic Alliance in 1999, became a branch activist in the Sunnyside Acardia area and in 2000 I was elected as the first black ward councillor. From 2000 t0 2008 I was serving the CIty of Tshwane, I have served under various portfolios.

Since 2009, I have been a member of parliament, serving as a shadow minister in housing and currently as a shadow minister for international relations.

The Economic Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is reportedly unsure of Mokgalapa's candidacy.

Mokgalapa says he will be meeting with local leaders and recoginises the EFF as a major player in the region.

The EFF is a major player in the Tshwane politics and we also have a principle of agreeing to disagree, they support us on a case by case, vote by vote.... so of course, as a very important stakeholder, I will be engaging with them in the next 24 hours.
