The Mitchells Plain CPF says locals must remain alert to suspicious persons and avoid withdrawing cash or filling up at odd hours.

The Mitchells Plain Community Policing Forum (CPF) has told residents to be vigilant while visiting petrol service stations, particularly in the early hours of the morning or late night.

This comes after a CCTV footage showed two women forced out of a car by hijackers at a petrol station in Mitchells Plain on Friday.

The footage, which has been widely shared on social media, shows the women hijacked in just 22 seconds at a BP Garage in Cedar Close in the Westridge area.

The police are investigating the hijacking, but no arrests have been made and the car has not yet been recovered.

Mitchells Plain CPF says all Capetonians need to be more be more alert to suspicious persons and avoid withdrawing money or filling up fuel at odd hours.

The forum's Ashley Potts says petrol station owners need to beef up security and collaborate with community safety groups if they want to curb crime.

This is a reality that happens, not only in Mitchells Plain, but in any area near a petrol station or ATM.

Ashley Potts, Spokesperson - Mitchells Plain CPF

We need to up our security at the petrol stations because there's very little security and they aren't trained for these kinds of situations.
