'New Gauteng police commissioner is special and fitting for the position'

Police Minister Bheki Cele announced the appointment of the new Gauteng police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, to succeed Deliwe De Lange who resigned last year.

National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole says Mawela is one of the most seasoned police officer who worked himself through various ranks within the service.

He went through the practical experience of growing through the levels. He has been at the station, so he knows and understands what the station is. He has been at the level of the province, and at national he has been a divisional commission for ORS, and he drove all the national operations including Operation Fiela.

Sitole says Mawela went through a rigorous vetting process to ensure that mistakes of the past are not repeated.

This relates to former commissioner Deliwe de Lange who was given her marching orders after it came to light that she was allegedly involved in fraud of tax certificates.

Sitole says he requested a review of the HR policy framework to include the Strategic Intelligent Act as a requirement for vetting.

We have a vetting process which includes a lifestyle audit and where we are moving to no one will enter the service without passing vetting. No one will be promoted to a position which must win public confidence without vetting. That is a prerequisite and majors put in place - and Mawela has been vetted.
