The public is divided after the emergence of a video showing a teacher slapping a learner.
The incident happened at the Sans Souci Girls' High School in Newlands, Cape Town.
It is believed the incident started when the teacher and the learner argued over a cellphone the learner had brought to school.
In the video currently doing the rounds on social media, the teacher can be heard admonishing the girl for having her cellphone with her in contravention of the school's code of conduct.
As the learner pushes past the teacher to retrieve her confiscated phone, the teacher is seen slapping the girl.
There will also be an investigation by the governing body, getting statements from the learners to find out what was happening before the incident in the classroom.— Debbie Schafer, Western Cape MEC for Education
There appears also to be non-compliance by the learner with the school's code of conduct so they are also looking at a disciplinary hearing against the learner.— Debbie Schafer, Western Cape MEC for Education
They (the students) were saying that there were people who wanted to jump on the bandwagon and make it into an issue of race and the learners are saying no that's not true.— Debbie Schafer, Western Cape MEC for Education
Schafer says they have made progress in that school since the last time issues of race were raised.
They [students] support the teacher and this has nothing to do with race that there are issues surrounding this incident.— Debbie Schafer, Western Cape MEC for Education
Until our govt supports teaches, cops and nurses, you will end up with a situation where good and passionate people leave those professions and are replaced by teachers who molest children, rogue cops and nurses who rape and beat patients. #SansSouci #ValhallaPrimarySchool— Botho Molosankwe (@Mizzyb1) February 6, 2019
The teacher at #sanssouci should be held responsible for unprofessional behaviour. NOT for racism.— Funani Khumalo (@GayFunani) February 6, 2019
I find it extremely hilarious that ADULTS are justifying hitting a minor with the statement “she was provoked”!!! A whole adult couldn’t restrain herself? A whole adult with apparently 3 degree? This is nonsense #SansSouci— H E D O N I C 🇧🇼 🇿🇦 🇺🇸 (@TakeNoOffence) February 6, 2019
The #sanssouci issue opens up a bigger debate. How many schools still practice corporal punishment? My little brother and his friend tells you about teachers beating them with obejcts at school. Nobody bats an eye. This needs to be looked at @AngieMotshekga— Solomon Mopantokobogo (@MopanSolo) February 6, 2019
