Should DA be asking for your ID no. to opt out of all communication with them?

As elections season is in full swing, some people have taken to social media to air their frustrations over the Democratic Alliance’s constant communication with them.

Some have received SMSs, others voice recordings and some even phone calls, encouraging them to vote for the DA but is this type of interaction completely lawful?

There’s been a complaint that those who wish to opt out of these communications are being asked to provide their ID numbers, but should the DA be asking for such personal information?

Legal expert, Natasha Moni spoke to Joanne Joseph to clarify this.

The DA can contact people however, the rules of engagement are this, in terms of electric communication, I need explicit opt-in permission from the recipient. If they are calling you they are allowed one call.

Moni says the DA should not be asking for ID numbers.

That is incorrect. There are few ways you in which you can complain, one is to take it straight to the regulator and say this is incorrect. The other is to actually go to the Direct Marketing Association of South Africa. The more practical way of doing things is to just block them.
