W Cape Ed Dept has 5-year plan to foster respect between teachers and pupils

The Education MEC in the Western Cape Debbie Schafer says the School's governing body at Sans Souci Girls' High School in Newlands, Cape Town is currently dealing with an incident that took place on Tuesday where a teacher slapped a learner.

A video imaged on social media showing an alteration between a learner and a teacher at the school. After a heated exchange, the learner pushes a desk at the teacher and the teacher is seen slapping the learner very hard.

Some learners at the school came out in support of the teacher claiming that the learner is "troubled".

Schafer says the department is also providing some assistance as well as equipping teachers on how to handle these kinds of situations without resorting to corporal punishment.

She says parents need to come on board to assist teachers in these matters.

My department has embarked on a five-year plan to change the mindset of teachers as well as learners and part of that is to instill respect for each other.

Debbie Schafer, MEC - Western Cape Education Department

As part of our strategy, there are resources available for alternative discipline other than corporal punishment. We are doing what we can but we are also appealing to parents to please assist us.

Debbie Schafer, MEC - Western Cape Education Department

Our teachers have to be mothers, nurses, social workers, psychologists and also still try to teach and it is extremely difficult for our teachers to do that. We need our parents at home to teach our children the values of respect for teachers.
