Five miners confirmed dead and 22 others still trapped at Gloria Coal Mine

The number of miners trapped underground at the Gupta owned Gloria coal mine, near Middleburg in Mpumalanga, has risen to five.

EWN reporter Mia Lindeque says police have confirmed that many more people are still trapped underground and the situation is tense as the rescue mission continues.

The management confirmed that there was a gas explosion on Wednesday which resulted in people getting trapped.

It is understood that the men went into the mine to steal copper, says Lindeque.

A source close to the rescue operation said it is a very dangerous situation and they can't risk any of their lives to go and see what is going on underground.

The Department of Mineral Resources said it first wants to test the gas to see what kind of gas they are dealing with and they will take from there.

Lindeque says it was estimated that 22 more people are still underground

The police have opened an inquest case to look into this matter and they are currently trying to stop people from going underground who have family members who are still trapped.

They are very concerned and are attempting to go underground themselves. But it is a dangerous situation and the police have their hands full to prevent them from going underground.
