Wits University SRC is on a hunger strike to protest the lack of accommodation and the registration for students with historical debt.
Students are staging a demonstration at the institution’s Solomon Mahlangu House.
The situation took a turn for the worse on Thursday, leaving police on high alert after students allegedly threw rocks at security officers and stunt grenades also being fired.
The communications officer at Wits, Shirona Patel says classes were disrupted on the west campus in Braamfontein.
A group of about 50 to 100 people, I'm not sure if they were all students, tried to disrupt lecturers at the west campus this morning. However, we managed to clear the roads and we have students and staff coming in from other entrances.— Shirona Patel, Communications officer - Wits University
It is contained at the moment. We did have students throwing rocks at some of the security guards earlier. We now have just the group around the great hall but the is police and security presence.— Shirona Patel, Communications officer - Wits University
