‘Will’ this. ‘Will’ that. 'Will' - the most frequently used word in every Sona

Watch the slideshow below for a visual representation of the most frequently used words in every State of the Nation address.

The most frequently used word in every State of the Nation Address since 1994 is “will”.

After analysing each speech and discarding the most commonly used words in English (such as “the”, “of”, “and”, “are”, “that” and other short words used to build sentences) the word “will” comes out tops.

It’s interesting to note how the use of the word “will” spikes after elections.

President Jacob Zuma used the word “compatriots” a lot, with 10 or more mentions in most years and 24 mentions in 2016.

The word “Eskom” is conspicuous by its, if not absence, then rarity.

President Zuma mentioned “corruption” eight times in 2013 and seven times in 2014 before the election.

President Mandela, President Mbeki and President Ramaphosa have all used it five or six times in respective speeches.

President Zuma mentioned HIV most in 2014 before the election (4 times); he typically said it two or three times.

President Mbeki never mentioned HIV more than once.
