'It's one of the cheapest Sonas in five years, they've really cut back'

There's been a lot of cutting back at this year's State of the Nation Address (Sona) which will be delivered by President Cyril Ramaphosa at 7pm on Thursday evening.

Given the country’s economic climate, Parliament’s presiding officers decided to scale back on the expenses.

The cutbacks will reportedly save Parliament 47% on last year’s event, costing around R2.5 million this year compared to around R4.7 million in previous years.

Political analyst and former ANC MP Melanie Verwoerd says officials are trying to return the ceremony to a humble affair.

MPs will forgo snacks this evening and there will be no speaker’s dinner afterwards, EWN reports.

It's one of the cheapest Sona's in five years, they've really cut back.

Melanie Verwoerd, political analyst and former ANC MP

Verwoerd compares the first Sona she attended as an MP in 1995 and how things have changed since.
