Chamber of Legal Students to represent Sans Souci pupil in slapping case

The mother of a Sans Souci Girls' High pupil who was involved in an altercation with her teacher, ending with the teacher slapping her, has turned to the Chamber of Legal Students for representation.

Both the teacher and the learner have been suspended pending an investigation.

Chamber of Legal Students chair, Yolisa Nocanda says it has accepted the mother's request to represent her daughter.

He says it appears that Sans Souci Girls' High has not managed the case well from the outset.

The learner was suspended. She is sitting at home and the only issue is that the learner hasn't been afforded an opportunity to sit with a counselor for the trauma she went through. She was not given sufficient learning material to catch up with her studies while she at home, so Sans Souci has already messed up the case before it started.

Nocanda says there will be a disciplinary hearing on 14 February and its team will be there to represent her.

He says from the documents it has received from the school it stipulates that the learner faces five charges.

It doesn't make sense.

It has emerged that both parties have opened criminal cases against each other.

Nocanda says the chamber cannot be party to any criminal proceedings as its mandate is only to represent high school students who appear before the school governing body and not the court of law.
