[LISTEN] When that word is 'on the tip of your tongue' explained

Do you often have moments where a word is at the tip of your tongue but you can't seem to remember it?

Naked Scientist Chris Smith says it's very common and there is no need to worry.

He explains how the process of speech is an incredibly demanding thing.

Your brain has got to work very fast, it has got to interpret information, its then got to plan out what it's going to say next, select all the right words and then execute the right movements of your lungs, your throat, your vocal chords, your face, your mouth, tongue in order to make the right sounds.

Chris Smith, Naked Scientist

While all that is going on, it has got to be doing it at the right volume, it has got to be listening to make sure that you are making sense to yourself and planning what you are going to say next and also watching the reaction of the person that you are talking to, to make sure that they getting it, so it is a really cognitively demanding process.

Chris Smith, Naked Scientist

Because that process is so demanding, every so often you just get a mental block.

Chris Smith, Naked Scientist

He says it is best not to obsess about the word you have forgotten.

If you are not careful and obsess about it too much, you will learn that you don't know the word, rather than if you just relax, forget it, move on, about 30 seconds to five minutes later the word you were looking for will pop up.

Chris Smith, Naked Scientist

It should only be a cause for alarm if it suddenly starts to happen to you a lot more, then maybe you should get things checked out.
