Cosatu wants Ramaphosa to explain "unbundling" of Eskom

During his second State of the Nation Address, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that Eskom would be split into three separate entities – generation, transmission and distribution, which will fall under the company Eskom Holdings.

Cosatu parliamentary coordinator Matthew Parks says the president's comments on Eskom are worrying because the unbundling could mean privatisation of Eskom and loss of jobs for workers.

As Cosatu, our bottom line is that there should not be retrenchments of workers.

Matthew Parks, Parliamentary coordinator - Cosatu

Workers should not be made to lose jobs because politicians and Eskom's management have looted Eskom dry.

Matthew Parks, Parliamentary coordinator - Cosatu

Parks says the president was very vague in his address about Eskom.

He says the president spoke about the unbundling process and its consequences without spelling out what that really means.

We have tried as Cosatu to have engagement with government but have had no luck. They have been running away from engaging us.

Matthew Parks, Parliamentary coordinator - Cosatu

It is very difficult for us to support any retrenchments, especially when in an economy where we have one out of three workers unemployed and thousands of workers retrenched especially in the mining sector.

Matthew Parks, Parliamentary coordinator - Cosatu

The whole financing of Eskom has to be reviewed. Right now Eskom is paying very expensive rates to the IDPs when they can produce electricity quite cheap. That is part of the problem that is milking Eskom dry right now.

Matthew Parks, Parliamentary coordinator - Cosatu

Once you manage the bleeding, then you can start managing the debt and reducing debt levels.

Matthew Parks, Parliamentary coordinator - Cosatu

There will be a national strike against job losses organised by Cosatu on 13 February, says Parks.
