A video is circulating on social media showing Economic Freedom Fighter's (EFF) Marshall Dlamini slapping a man now believed to be a plains clothes cop in the face after the 2019 State of the Nation Address on Thursday.
The African Christian Democratic Party's (ACDP) Member of Parliament (MP) Steve Swart who saw what happened says they had just come out of Parliament.
There were a number of policemen in front of us that said just wait a moment because the president is taking pictures. There were a number of MPs that were waiting and the police were very courteous.— Steve Swart, MP - ACDP
Then the whole EFF brigade came through and said they have work to do and they pushed through, they pushed passed me and a scuffle ensued. I didn't see any blows, I just heard a hard slap. And I saw the one policeman go backwards.— Steve Swart, MP - ACDP
It must have been very hard because he staggered back and then I saw some blood on his cheek and then there was a scuffle.— Steve Swart, MP - ACDP
He adds that the scuffle is regrettable because the police are there to protect Members of Parliament and he hopes that this issue is investigated by parliament and law enforcement agencies.
The EFF has released a statement citing an assassination plot against leader Julius Malema by right-wing forces and say this is the reason for the altercation.
