'Weak' opposition will hand ANC, Ramaphosa 60% election win - analyst

Political analyst Richard Calland says the ANC is likely to secure over 60% of the vote at the upcoming elections.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has proclaimed 8 May as the date for the 2019 elections.

He made the announcement during his 2019 State of the Nation Address before Parliament on Thursday.

Calland predicts that the ANC will maintain its majority, partly because of the feeble value proposition offered by opposition parties.

For the ANC and Ramaphosa, the threshold for success or failure is 60%. If they go below 60% then I think Ramaphosa will be weakened and vulnerable to detractors.

Richard Calland, Political analyst and author

He adds that Ramaphosa came out of his Sona speech politically stronger and left the opposition looking weak.

Calland says the provincial electoral contest in Gauteng and the Western Cape will be tight and shares his forecast for the campaign season.

I don't think it's going to be a particularly elegant or dignified electoral campaign to be honest.

Richard Calland, Political analyst and author

The debates are not about policy or ideas, but about things that separate us, 'otherness', immigration, race, inequality.
