Metro police chief Wayne le Roux describes how two officers were shot when a group of men staged a breakdown in order to rob motorists.

Metro police chief Wayne Le Roux describes to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies how two officers were shot when a group of men staged a breakdown in order to rob motorists just after 2.30am on Monday morning.

I received a call that two of my officers were shot.

Wayne Le Roux, Metro police chief - Cape Metro Police

Le Roux says police received a call that a vehicle had broken down on the N2 incoming close to Borchards Quarry. The officers were approached by four people who said someone had been injured

While they were about to render assistance, they were shot by these four people.

Wayne Le Roux, Metro police chief - Cape Metro Police

We discovered on our cameras that these four people who had pretended to assist this person had actually injured him and robbed him at the scene and then shot officers.

Wayne Le Roux, Metro police chief - Cape Metro Police

So they came under false pretenses to help a person who had broken down due to rocks being placed on the roadway...they were obviously there to rob this innocent person.

Wayne Le Roux, Metro police chief - Cape Metro Police

The victim was taken to Groote Schuur Hospital. The two police officers are also receiving treatment in hospital for gunshot injuries. Le Roux says the officers and the team will receive trauma councelling.

Le Roux urges citizens to report any unusual incidents on the N2/R300 corridor report these to 021 480 7700 from cellphone or 107 a from landline.
