Gauteng roads official put on special leave over shady William Nicol tender

Gauteng's head of roads and transport Ronald Swartz has been placed special leave following the illegal awarding of a road construction tender in the province.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura commissioned an investigation conducted by the provincial treasury after being approached by insider and whistleblower, Bonga Majola.

The R550 million tender involved the construction and upgrade of William Nicol Road (K46) in Johannesburg.

Majola claims he had initially reported the irregularities to Swartz and then later to Transport MEC Ismail Vadi, both of whom he says did act on the allegations.

Gauteng provincial government spokesperson Thabo Masebe would not be drawn on whether any action would be taken against MEC Vadi.

Masebe could also not confirm whether the whistleblower Majola would get his job back after being suspended some time ago.

The company was awarded the contract in 2015. The investigation conducted by provincial treasury revealed that the contract was irregularly awarded.

I can't speak on the conduct of MECs, that's a matter between the Premier and the MECs.

We have a report that we are acting on. If the report proposes criminal charges we will look into that.
