[LISTEN] As a matter of fact: A look at the #2019 SONA

Senior Researcher at Africa Check Kate Wilkinson says while most of the claims made in President Cyril Ramaphosa's State of the Nation Address were correct, two statements made by the president on Thursday night were amiss.

Verifying the president's claims the team found that Ramaphosa's assertion around the number of children in early childhood development centres was understated.

While the president put the number at more than 700 000, Wilkinson says it's actually closer to 2.5 million.

He has understated it, it's way off and this is worrying...we need to plan and budget for these children, so knowing how many there are is important. Secondly, there is a concern that international investors and globally, people use school enrollment as sign and index of how government's are prioritising education and how committed they are to it.

Despite this Wilkinson says the president did well overall.

Apart from that it's mainly good. I think with President Ramaphosa we are seeing more correct statements. It looks like the President has a good team of researchers and speech writers. It's good to see.
