[LISTEN] Meet South African artist and TIME Magazine cover star, Nelson Makamo

An art piece by one of South Africa's leading artists Nelson Makamo has made it onto one of two covers published this year for TIME magazine's 'optimism' issue.

The edition, guest edited by American director Ava DuVernay hit newsstands last week.

Makamo spoke to Azania Mosaka about the inspiration behind his work.

She has been following my work, she has been collecting my work. She pitched the idea to Time and they actually had to look at my profile, and that is when they approached me and asked me if I would be happy to do the cover.

Nelson Makomo, visual-artist

When you look at history, it is not often when an artist of colour gets to work on a special cover, especially on the special editions. So for me, I look at it as something that is not only for me but for everyone in the industry. For a change, there is a spotlight for all of us.
