Corruption Watch is calling on Parliament to clarify processes within Ipid following contract squabbles between Cele and McBride.

The head of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) Robert McBride is taking Police Minister Bheki Cele to court over his contract of employment.

Cele informed McBride that he won't be renewing the contract when it lapses at the end of the month but McBride argues that it is up Parliament to make the decision,

McBride is supported by several civil society groups in his fight including Corruption Watch.

Executive director of Corruption Watch David Lewis says their interest in the matter is preserving the independence and integrity of Ipid.

David Lewis, Executive director - Corruption Watch

The minister has now agreed that it is not his decision and the Portfolio Committee has advanced the argument that it should be taking the decision which is the position we concur with.

David Lewis, Executive director - Corruption Watch

Lewis says their involvement is not so much about McBride keeping the position but mostly about providing clarity around who makes decisions in independent organisations like Ipid.
