Tablets in classrooms shouldn't substitute quality teaching, says scientist
Are tablets the best tools for optimal learning?
Last week, President Cyril Ramaphosa said he wants a tablet device for every pupil in South African schools within six years.
Dr Chris Smith says that while digital devices can be beneficial they should not replace quality teaching, investment in quality teachers or the commitment of learners.
He adds that the perks of learning from a screen and learning from a page may differ according to an individual's learning style.
Dr Smith, also known as the Naked Scientist, says the introduction of digital devices in learning environments such as classrooms and lecture halls comes with greater responsibility.
