Bring back Brian Molefe? Load shedding woes spark debate on Eskom leadership

The crisis at Eskom has left South Africans torn over how to rescue the beleaguered power utility.

Load-shedding woes have ignited calls on social media for the return of former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe.

Molefe stepped down in 2016 amid state capture allegations by former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

But he made a brief return to Eskom in 2017 following a legal dispute over his R30 million pension pay-out.

Brian Molefe was trending on Twitter for some parts of Tuesday as a result of the nostalgia and debate over his leadership.

Many Twitter uses echoed the sentiments that Molefe "kept the lights on", while others claimed that this was achieved through corruption and by wastefully burning billions of rands in diesel.

Gayton McKenzie and Mzwanele Manyi are among the politicians who weighed in to the debate, as well as journalists including Barney Mthombothi and Ferial Haffajee.
