Increase in number of people defaulting on ARVs - Mamelodi TAC

The Mamelodi Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) has disputed the Gauteng health department's figures on number of HIV patients who are defaulting on their anti-retroviral (ARV) drug treatment in one of Tshwane's biggest health centres.

The organisation has noted an increase in the number of HIV patients who are defaulting on their anti-retroviral (ARV) drug treatment at the Stanza Bopape Community Health Centre in Mamelodi, saying the number of defaulters has gone up to 6,000.

Mamelodi TAC chairperson Bobby Mohanoe says the poor health infrastructure is one contributing factor.

The infrastructure is very old and not conducive to people of Mamelodi. It is a crisis.

Bobby Mohanoe, Chairperson - Mamelodi TAC

The reasons vary. One of the things I can assure you is that, for example in stanza CIC, teh facility is very small and when people come to fetch their medicine, they just want to come, receive their medicine and leave, they do not want to spend the whole day there.

Bobby Mohanoe, Chairperson - Mamelodi TAC

People are impatient and you find again, lack of adherence clubs. Adherence clubs assist in fast tracking the issue of people receiving their medicine quickly.

Bobby Mohanoe, Chairperson - Mamelodi TAC

This thing is psychological. They need the clubs, support groups that will encourage them to continue taking their medicine.
