'Politicians say outrageous things to get attention during election'

The comments made by the South African Communist Party’s second deputy general-secretary, Solly Mapaila caused a stir on social media when he insinuated that Pan Africanist Congress founder Robert Sobukwe colluded with the apartheid government.

Mapaila claims that Sobukwe received preferential treatment from the government when other freedom fighters were treated differently.

Associate professor at Unisa’s Institute for African Renaissance Studies, Simphiwe Sesanti says politicians will go to extreme lengths to draw attention to themselves especially as elections draw near.

When we are getting closer to elections you will find that certain politicians are very eager to attract attention to themselves, therefore, they would say things that are outrageous.

Simphiwe Sesanti, Associate professor - Unisa

The question is what makes them say it now, what compels them? We can see it is that desperate moment that calls for desperate measures.
