[LISTEN] Environmental Affairs department records decrease in rhino poaching
The Department of Environmental Affairs has recorded a a decrease in rhino poaching incidents. resulting from the implementation of the Integrated Strategic Management of Rhinoceros from 2018.
Incidents have decreased to 769 compared to 2017 when 1 028 rhino were killed for their horns.
The department says this is the first time in 5 years that the annual figure is under 1000.
The Integrated Strategic Management of Rhinoceros approach was adopted by Cabinet in 2014.
Head of Communications for the Department of Environments Affairs Albi Modise says the decrease is due to the collaborative efforts of the department and law enforcement agencies.
It's a criminal activity so we realised the fact that we need to work with the police because ultimately they are the ones who need to lead the investigations and the justice department needs to kick in there. So the different arms and different facets of the activities that are carried out had to be brought under one strategic objective.Albi Modise, Head of communications - Department of Environmental Affairs
The poaching activities we have seen in South Africa over the years is as a result of what is emerging to be an international illicit wild life trade. So we have worked with Vietnam, Thailand and a number of countries.Albi Modise, Head of communications - Department of Environmental Affairs
So the decrease seen in 2018 is indicative of the previous years of hard work that has seen over the past 5 years parching activities decline.Albi Modise, Head of Communications - Department of Environmental Affairs
